Topic: TinyMCE and Mobile Browsers

There is a lot of questions regarding TinyMCE and why it doesn't work on the modern mobile browsers.

We have made tests on iPhone as well as the latest version of Android (2.2 Froyo) and they do not have proper support for editing.

Android 2.2 Froyo does claim that they have support for contentEditable, but our test find it completly useless. You do not get a keyboard when focusing the area, there are no cursor so you can not se where you type and there are various focus issues as well as showstopping problems with selections.

Same goes for iPhone, altho they do not claim to have support we have made some tests and it does seem to have some parts of contentEditable in there, however its to buggy to use.

Want to help?

Put pressure on the mobile developer, iPhone and Android specifically.

For Android, there is a bug report where they claim to have contentEditable support, tell them otherwise please.

Have no idea where to submit webkit iphone issues, the official webkit bug reporting tool does not list iPhone, iPad or iOS as an option when submitting new bugs. But Apple are aware of the issue, they are using TinyMCE in their MobileMe application for iPhone and iPad and asked us to add a check for iPad and iPhone so the editor doesn't get loaded.

It is only with your help the support can get better.

Re: TinyMCE and Mobile Browsers

I'm using TinyMCE 3.1.1 without any problems on SonyEricsson X10i with Android 1.6. Should I wait with an update?

Re: TinyMCE and Mobile Browsers

Afaik that should not work, but then again we never really done any tests in 1.6.

Re: TinyMCE and Mobile Browsers

I tried the first of your example with 3.3.8 and it did not work on my Xperia X10.

Re: TinyMCE and Mobile Browsers

It works on my Nokia N900 (AFAIK N900 is the only mobile phone with – as they market it - "true internet experience"). I've used it couple of times (not extensively). It’s kind of slow, but still a lot faster than running back to office when any of my clients needs to publish something urgently…

Very nice work, guys!

Using TinyMCE 3.1.1 on my X10 gives no problem smile

Re: TinyMCE and Mobile Browsers

Thank you for this post, Afraithe. When reporting this bug (specifically regarding iOS), will my report be that contentEditable doesn't work at all, or that it's simply buggy and does not work as expected? Having worked in enterprise software development, I know change requests can fall through the cracks unless they're extremely specific. Steps to reproduce the problem, etc.

Re: TinyMCE and Mobile Browsers

We are getting some reports that the editor works on some platforms as you can see, we have an Android 2.2 Froyo Tablet, and contentEditables does not work on that one. It is kind of close if you install Firefox, but there are a huge number of issues.

As for iOS, its not so much a bug report that is needed, more like a feature request to add contentEditable, but there are more to it than that, selection issues as well as focus issues.

Re: TinyMCE and Mobile Browsers

iOS 5 is getting rich-text support for emails.

There's a good chance that this will mean absolutely nothing, but there's always a long-shot that Apple implement this using webkit technology, which spills over into contentEditable in Safari.
Fingers crossed..?

Re: TinyMCE and Mobile Browsers

Is there any update on support for mobile/smartphone (Android, iOS) browsers? The last post was some time ago.

I searched the doc (nothing) and this forum (two articles, this discussion being one of them).

I can turn off MCE it I detect a mobile browser, that's not a problem, but I would like to have the MCE functionality for mobile users too.  The default mobile browser on my Droid and Opera Mobile seem to be very capable.

Thanks,
-Kim

Re: TinyMCE and Mobile Browsers

It kind of works on iOS. You can edit and format contents on an iPad for example though a bit tricky and Safari tends to crash a lot. Nothing we can do about that tough since it's totally random. I would guess it leaks memory here and there hopefully future versions of Safari for iOS and also Android will work a lot better.

Re: TinyMCE and Mobile Browsers

Since i installed phpfox TinyMCE integration the users who were opening "Full Site" from mobile phone cannot post comments using the TinyMCE editor...

Any idea on how to resolve this bug?

Re: TinyMCE and Mobile Browsers

I just updated to the latest version of TinyMCE - version 3.5b3 - and it seems to work ok with the iPad. Have the issues with Safari on the iPad been resolved or are there still issues I should be aware of?

One side question - I inserted an image and normally you can right click on the image to bring up a menu in TinyMCE. Is this possible using Safari on iPad?

Re: TinyMCE and Mobile Browsers

Will TinyMCE only work on iPads and iPhones with the most recent version of TinyMCE? I have a web site system using TinyMCE 3.4.2 but it just doesn't show the TinyMCE editor at all - the textarea field is just displayed as a normal field.

It is a shame that these billionaire companies in 2013 do not provide support for something as trivial (cosidering who we are talking about) as this. Thanks for the heads up.

You must be mistaken
